A household planning application

What it does

The application connects to a user’s financial institutions through Plaid, with their authorisation, and presents their balances, transactions and investment holdings. It also keeps a task list, where a user can give a task a due date and select a reminder schedule. Reminders are transactional: each one is generated by the application from settings that user chose.

Text messaging

Who sends:the Rio’s House application, automatically, when a reminder a user scheduled comes due. No message is composed or sent by a person.

Who receives: registered users of the application, on mobile numbers they entered and confirmed in their own accounts. A number that has not been registered and confirmed receives nothing.

Why: the user created a task, gave it a due date, and chose how far in advance to be reminded. The message is that reminder. There is no marketing, no promotion and no third-party content.

How someone opts in

1. The user signs in to their account at rios.house with Google. Access is limited to approved addresses.
2. In their own account settings the user types their mobile number into a field that is empty by default. Nothing is pre-filled and no box is pre-checked.
3. A confirmation text is sent to that number reading: “rios.house: You asked to receive task reminders on this number. Reply YES to confirm, or STOP to opt out. Msg & data rates may apply.”
4. The number receives nothing further until they reply YES. Replying STOP, or clearing the field in settings, ends it immediately.

A user may also text the application’s number to create a task. That is a message they send, not one they receive.

Frequency: only when a reminder a user scheduled comes due. Typically a few messages a week, and fewer than fifteen a month.
