Rio’s House
A private household finance and task tool
Rio’s House, at rios.house, is used by a single household of two people, who are also its owners. It is not a product, there is nothing to sign up for, and no account can be created. Sign-in is restricted to two specific email addresses; any other Google account is refused.
What it does
It shows the household their own bank balances, transactions and investments, retrieved from their banks through Plaid with their authorisation, and it keeps a shared task list.
Text messaging
Who sends:Rio’s House, to the household’s own two members.
Who receives: only those two people, on mobile numbers they entered themselves. Nobody else can be messaged, because no other number can be added.
Why: reminders for tasks they created and scheduled for themselves in this application. There is no marketing, no promotion and no third-party content.
How someone opts in
- They sign in to their own account at rios.house with Google. Only the two allowlisted addresses can do this.
- On their own settings page they type their own mobile number into a field that is empty by default. Nothing is pre-filled and no box is pre-checked.
- A confirmation text is sent to that number reading: “rios.house: You asked to receive task reminders on this number. Reply YES to confirm, or STOP to opt out. Msg & data rates may apply.”
- The number receives nothing further until they reply
YES. ReplyingSTOP, or clearing the field in settings, ends it immediately.
A member can also text the household number to create a task. That is a message they send, not one they receive.
Frequency: only when a reminder a member set comes due. Typically a few messages a week, and fewer than fifteen a month.
